WB: Use at an assay dependent dilution. Predicted molecular weight: 200 kDa. Not tested in other applications. Optimal dilutions/concentrations should be determined by the end user.

Nestin is a 200kD, class VI intermediate filament protein that is predominantly expressed in stem cells of the neural tube; its expression usually being absent from mature neuronal cells. Nestin is downregulated upon terminal neural differentiation and replaced by neurofilaments. Nestin is extensively used as a marker to identify CNS stem cells. NB: Nestin expression has been more recently discovered in non-neural stem cell populations, such as pancreatic islet progenitors as well as hematopoietic progenitors.

Function: May play a role in the trafficking and distribution of IF proteins and potentially other cellular factors to daughter cells during progenitor cell division (By similarity).

Subunit: Interacts with FHOD3 (By similarity).

Tissue Specificity: CNS stem cells.

Developmental Stage: Upon terminal neural differentiation, nestin is down-regulated and replaced by neurofilaments.

Similarity: Belongs to the intermediate filament family.
