Description

Fusion: T7 tag at N-terminus. Catalytic Activity: Nicotinate D-ribonucleotide + diphosphate + CO2 = pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylate + 5-phospho-alpha-D-ribose 1-diphosphate.

Pathway: NAD biosynthesis; kynurenine pathway; tryptophan to NaMN; seventh (last) step.

Similarity: Belongs to the nadC/modD family.

Summary: This protein is a key enzyme in catabolism of quinolinate, an intermediate in the tryptophan-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide pathway. Quinolinate acts as a most potent endogenous exitotoxin to neurons. Elevation of quinolinate levels in the brain has been linked to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as epilepsy, Alzheimer\'s disease, and Huntington\'s disease.
